Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye disease is more than an inconvenience — it is a progressive condition that affects vision, comfort, and quality of life. At Avenue Ophthalmology, it has been a clinical priority for decades and remains one of the practice's defining areas of expertise.

Recent years have brought significant advances in dry eye technology, moving treatment well beyond artificial tears and warm compresses. Avenue Ophthalmology offers the most clinically validated in-office therapies available today, including LipiFlow and BlephEx.

In-Office Treatment

LipiFlow

The majority of dry eye cases are caused by meibomian gland dysfunction — a condition in which the glands along the eyelid margin become blocked and fail to secrete the oils essential to a stable, comfortable tear film. LipiFlow is an FDA-approved, in-office treatment that addresses this at the source.

Using a precisely calibrated combination of gentle heat and pulsatile pressure applied directly to the inner and outer eyelid, LipiFlow softens and expresses the obstructed glands in a single 12-minute session. Clinical studies have demonstrated that a single treatment can sustain improvement in gland function and dry eye symptoms for up to nine months — and in some patients, benefits have been observed for up to three years.

In-Office Treatment

BlephEx

Blepharitis — chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins — is one of the most common contributing factors to dry eye disease, and one of the most frequently overlooked. BlephEx is a brief, in-office procedure that removes the bacterial biofilm, debris, and overgrowth along the lash line that home care cannot fully address.

Using a medical-grade micro-sponge tip, the BlephEx device gently exfoliates the eyelid margin in a six-to-eight minute treatment, clearing the inflammatory load that obstructs gland function and compromises tear quality. Patients typically notice improvement immediately. Treatments are recommended every four to six months as part of an ongoing dry eye management plan.
